FreeNAS is an option, but seems like a waste to me when you could have a real server and thus full flexibility and app support. I like Stablebit Drivepool but Linux has ok free options, nothing as nice, but free is good too.įlexraid is a waste of money, IMO. You can also add in any older drives you have and setup a drive pool. I bought a cheapish ASROCK boat with 8 SATA ports for 80 bucks or something, works fine for my 11 TB server and it's rock solid with 3 people using it constantly. Your plex server will always be on most likely so it will be a NAS effectively. Get a server and a Roku or such and you'll be set, no need for NAS. I'd suggest a Windows or Linux server, with Windows being vastly easier to setup and maintain and having the better app selection. A NAS can't transcode media and even if it could it's little processor would choke. If you want all the cool NZB apps and a plex server then what you want is a full blow server. But mostly it's the cost and issues that people tend to have with consumer level NAS. With PLEX, since you have to run a server to transcode, a NAS really loses it's main appeal. Also since it's built off reusable parts it's easy to repair. Why not just put hard drives in a desktop case, it's far cheaper and more reliable than messing with NAS issues.Ī standard file server has no real limitations like NAS, it won't be incompatible with your drives or give you issues with future expansion like consumer level NAS will. You still need a computer/server to transcode.
